With the recent attacks in the Norwegian capital of Oslo July 23, 2011, people are advice to be more vigilant when travelling in that country. This post should be an advisory not only to Australians, but also to all nationalities who reside in that country. Here is a summary of a travel advisory from the Australian Government:

Summary
- We advise you to be alert to your own security in Norway.
- On Friday 22 July 2011 a large explosion occurred in central Oslo outside the Prime Minister’s office, resulting in a number of deaths and casualties and causing extensive damage in the surrounding area. In a separate incident, there was a shooting at a youth meeting in Utoya, an island on the outskirts of Oslo. There are reports a number of people have been killed in this attack.
- Norwegian Police have increased security around the affected area and urged people to stay at home and to avoid crowds and the city centre. Australians in Oslo are advised to monitor the media and follow the advice of local authorities.
- In 2010 and 2011, the US Government warned its citizens of the potential for terrorist attacks in Europe, including on public transport and tourist infrastructure. A number of terrorist attacks on passenger railway systems, aviation interests, including passenger terminals, and other places frequented by travellers have occurred in Europe. In recent years these types of attacks have occurred in Moscow, London, Madrid and Glasgow. In addition, a number of planned attacks have been disrupted by European security services recently, underscoring the continuing interest of terrorists in attacking such locations.
- Exercise common sense and look out for suspicious behaviour, as you would in Australia.
- The Australian Embassy in Denmark can provide consular assistance to Australians in Norway. Australia has an Honorary Consulate in Norway which can provide limited consular assistance.
